Rocky Mountain - Estes Park, CO June 18-23, 2005
The theme of this year’s Getaway was IGNIS, which means “fire” in Greek. Over 400 students from around the Midwest region gathered in Estes Park, CO, to learn about making the most of what’s been given to them. Students learned valuable life-changing lessons about knowing what they believe and why, then owning those beliefs, and ultimately taking the FIRE home to their friends and family. The week started out with prayer, daily quiet times with God, and praise and worship with a Campus Crusade band called Proof of Purchase.
Of course there were many activities during the day for students
such as basketball, volleyball, hiking, horseback riding, rafting,
and shopping.
During the day students were also exposed to a variety of teaching and training. From learning how to share their faith, to listening to women from a “girls only” time share their heart and life experiences. One of the many life-changing messages came from Craig Scott, the brother of Rachel Scott, who was killed in the 1999 Columbine High School shooting. He shared about Rachel’s life and her challenge to start a chain reaction of compassion towards others.
The first three
nights students heard from Chuck Bomar and the necessity of owning
their faith. During the last two evening sessions, the students were
blessed to hear from one of the most popular youth speakers today,
Josh McDowell! In the last 23 years he has given more than 18,000
talks to over 8 million students and faculty in 72 countries. This
time was filled with stories, laughter, and tears. The students
ultimately learned about the importance of knowing what they believe
and why they believe it.
An integral part of the conference was students taking what they learned during the week and going out to the community to share their faith with others. Students went to such places as downtown Estes Park, Pearl Street mall in Boulder, and the Flatirons mall in Broomfield. 48 people came to know Christ!
One of the most significant times of the conference was the final morning when Eric Wolf, the Getaway director, challenged the students to take their FIRE and reach their family, friends, schools, and world for Christ. He asked students who felt a calling on their lives to be ambassadors for Christ and commit their lives to full-time ministry. 70 students stepped forward and took the challenge!!
Thank you for the role you played in making this such a memorable and life changing conference for hundreds of Kids.
