April 30 - May 1, 2005 Shanty Town 2005 Hosted by Habitat For Humanity

One the above mentioned dates driven took a 2 day trip up to Adam's county Wisconsin. We left around 6 am and drove the three hours up. The event was called "Shanty Town", hosted by the local Habitat for Humanity, the goal was to build a cardboard shelter and sleep in it overnight so that you learned what it was like to have to sleep outside. Thus raising awareness for homelessness. Everyone was supposed to raise sponsors for the event and raise as much money as possible. 100% of the money went towards building a home in Adam's, Wisconsin for a local family. The top money raisers for the Group were John Maibauer and Katie Watt both raising around $120 each.

Our group not only built a cardboard structure, we built a fortress. Our first dwelling was somewhat of a TP consisting of large cardboard tubes duct taped together then reinforced with drywall screws. Once that was completed it was covered in flat cardboard. That was not enough, we realized we had extra cardboard and not enough room to sleep. Our next endeavor was a freestanding geometric dome. Made out of countless cardboard triangles simply box-taped together this dwelling help together through the wind and snow with no support. Our next ingenious idea was to combine the two. So we got everyone together and moved the freestanding dome close to the TP and made a tunnel out of remaining tubes. When that was done we still had extra and Tim Deleo made use of that by making a large tunnel or crawlspace area big enough for several people to sleep in. When completed the shelter held far more people than we had, and won biggest dwelling award.

The day was fun, we built the shelter, played softball, and just hung out. The night, however, was just plain Cold!!! John Maibauer, who thought he'd be a nice guy donated his sleeping bag to the Webbs, because he already had a thin blanket and said that would be all he'd need. Little did he know it would get below freezing and actually start to snow. Around 3 a.m. he ran to his car for warmth. Around the same time Tim Deleo Started to burn extra pieces of cardboard for warmth. The rest of the gang, somehow slept. All totaled our group raised over $1100 and we will be going back later in the year to help build the homes.
